THE ARTISTES

This is the FIRST year of the TRADANGUS SESSIONS with TAYROOTS and replaces The Hairst Sessions & Angus Folk Sessions, which ran for 10 years.

A unique and major event in Angus, featuring some of the finest Scottish folk musicians and singers from Angus and the surrounding area. We do hope you are able to come along and listen, or as these are open sessions, join in by giving us a song or a tune. Either way, you are most welcome and we will be delighted to see you.

The ‘Key Artistes’ will ‘host’ the sessions, also with fellow musicians and singers and yourselves:

RanDan, with their new line-up will start the main session programme.

Band members are:- Karen Hannah is a well-travelled fiddler having played in UK and abroad with various ensembles.

Involved in organising music events; loves playing at sessions and ceilidhs; busy teaching fiddle, including at The Wighton Centre in Dundee and private pupils.

Michael Kelleher - guitar accompaniment and some cracking songs.

Plus two other great musicians - David Adam & Kyle Howie on Great Highland, Scottish Small and Border Pipes, plus flute, whistles and accordion.

Katherine Liley, originally from near Portree on Skye, teaches Scottish fiddle in Angus schools where a group of her students from primary 6 to 18 years have gained the name 'The Funky Fiddlers'.

(note - many of the venues are suitable for families, but please check first by telephone; all juniors attending to be accompanied by a responsible adult).

Mike Ward - dynamic fiddling and subtle accompaniment; former member of Tannahill Weavers, Alba, also Fon a Bhord etc,; Mike has a music shop, specialising in stringed acoustic instruments, including pianos!, but mostly fiddle, viola, cello, guitar, mandoline etc; sales, repairs, set-ups, repairs, advice – whatever.

Maureen will be appearing this year with a couple of friends.

Lesley McLuckie is a member of one of Maureen’s singing groups in Dundee – has some very nice songs;

Ken Johnston is a friend from long ago that has just returned to Angus after 20+ years in Kendal. Fine singer, great repertoire backed up with some tasteful guitar and mandocello – he has recently joined up with Aff the Cuff.

Maureen Jelks

Eilidh and Lara played in 2008 as Birlin’, together with Douglas Dorward.

Last year they were joined at the sessions by Nicola, another friend and excellent musician on flute and fiddle, also former member of The Tayside Young Fiddlers.

No doubt some of these excellent young musicians will be attending Alasdair Fraser Fiddle Week at Sabhal Mor Ostaig on Skye.
